Description

TIME-SERT® 4800 M12 x 1.5 Universal Head Bolt Thread Repair Kit – Deep Reach

The genuine TIME-SERT® 4800 Universal Head Bolt Kit is a specialist M12 x 1.5 solid-bushing thread repair system designed for first-time repairs of damaged or stripped cylinder head bolt and engine block threads. Unlike a standard thread repair kit, the 4800 combines extended tooling, a two-diameter stepped core drill and a guided fixture system for applications where the original threads are positioned deep below the upper accessible surface of the engine block.

Deep-Recessed Head Bolt Repairs – The TIME-SERT® Flange Can Be Installed Down Inside the Bore

One of the most important features of the TIME-SERT® 4800 is that the insert flange does not have to sit at the upper surface of the engine block.

TIME-SERT® inserts incorporate an integrated flange for positive placement. With a conventional repair, it can be easy to assume that this flange must remain at the top surface of the component. The 4800 system is specifically designed to allow the tooling to travel through a suitable access bore and perform the repair at the actual recessed thread location.

The extended stepped core drill machines the required insert core hole and also creates the flange seating recess at this deeper position. The complete flanged TIME-SERT® insert can then be installed down inside the bore until its flange positively seats against the newly machined shoulder.

The flange therefore continues to perform its normal function: providing positive placement and preventing the insert from winding further down into the repaired thread.

Important: The achievable repair depth is not unlimited. It depends on the working reach of the drill, tap and installation driver together with the access bore diameter, fixture position, component geometry and available hole/thread depth. For unusually deep applications, please contact Ace Consumables with your measurements before purchasing.

How the Two-Diameter Stepped Core Drill Works

The specialist extended core drill supplied with the TIME-SERT® 4800 performs two separate machining operations as part of the repair:

1. Smaller Forward Cutting Diameter

The forward cutting section opens the damaged original hole to the correct core diameter required for the specialist TIME-SERT® insert tap. The extended tap subsequently cuts the receiving thread required for the outside of the solid TIME-SERT® insert.

2. Larger Secondary Cutting Diameter

Behind the forward cutting section is a larger set of cutting edges. These machine the counterbore / seating recess for the insert flange. The machined diameter provides the clearance required for the flange to enter the bore and positively seat against the shoulder.

Because both cutting sections are incorporated into the extended drill, the flange recess can be created down inside a deep access bore rather than being restricted to the upper surface of the component.

Guided Fixture Plate System for Deep Repairs

Accurate alignment becomes increasingly important as the distance between the upper surface and the damaged thread increases. Even a relatively small angular error at the top of a long tool can result in a considerably greater positional error at the actual repair location.

The TIME-SERT® 4800 therefore incorporates a dedicated fixture plate and guidance system to help maintain the tooling on the correct axis of the original cylinder head bolt thread.

  • Fixture Plate – P/N 56111 – Provides the foundation for guided machining.
  • Drill Bushing – P/N 7224 – Helps guide the extended cutting tool accurately.
  • Alignment Pin – P/N 7225 – Assists with correct positioning of the fixture system.
  • 2 x Short Fixture Bolts – P/N 32156 – Used for mounting the fixture in suitable applications.
  • 2 x Long Fixture Bolts – P/N 32157 – Provides an alternative fixture mounting arrangement where required.
  • 2 x Head Alignment Dowels – P/N 31307 – Assists with accurate fixture alignment.

Please note: The supplied short and long bolts are fixture mounting bolts. They are not replacement cylinder head bolts.

How the TIME-SERT® 4800 Repair Works

  1. ALIGN – Position and securely mount the fixture plate over the damaged M12 x 1.5 head bolt hole, ensuring the tooling is correctly aligned with the original thread axis.
  2. DRILL & RECESS – Use the extended stepped core drill. The smaller forward section prepares the core hole while the larger secondary cutting section machines the recessed flange seat.
  3. TAP – Use the extended TIME-SERT® insert tap to cut the specialist receiving thread required for the outside of the solid insert.
  4. INSTALL – Install the M12 x 1.5 x 30mm TIME-SERT® insert until its flange reaches and positively seats against the machined recess.
  5. LOCK – Continue the installation process with the driver. As the driver passes through the lower portion of the insert, the lower internal threads are cold-rolled, expanding the corresponding external threads into the parent material and mechanically locking the insert into position.

TIME-SERT® Solid Bushing Insert Technology

TIME-SERT® uses a solid bushing insert rather than a conventional wire-coil design. The integrated flange provides positive placement and prevents the insert from winding further down into the repaired hole.

During final installation, the lower section of the insert is mechanically locked into the parent material by the installation driver. This combination of solid construction, positive flange placement and mechanical locking provides a permanent-style professional thread repair system when correctly installed.

First-Time Repair Only – Check Previously Repaired Holes

The TIME-SERT® 4800 is intended for first-time M12 x 1.5 thread repairs where the original factory thread has become damaged or stripped.

If the hole has previously been repaired, enlarged, fitted with another solid insert, fitted with a wire insert or otherwise modified, do not assume that this kit will be suitable. The existing hole should be measured before any further machining is carried out.

Please contact Ace Consumables with the existing hole dimensions if you are unsure.

Deep Application? Send Us These Measurements Before Ordering

If your damaged thread is positioned particularly deep within the engine block or access is restricted, send us the following measurements before purchasing:

  1. Thread Start Depth – Distance from the upper accessible surface to where the original M12 x 1.5 thread begins.
  2. Total Hole Depth – Distance from that same upper surface to the bottom of the hole.
  3. Access Bore Diameter – Diameter of the bore through which the tooling must pass.
  4. Available Thread Depth – Usable threaded depth at the actual repair location.
  5. Fixture Clearance – Available space around the hole for positioning and securing the fixture plate.

Ace Consumables can compare these measurements against the tooling dimensions before purchase to help determine whether the 4800 system has suitable working reach and clearance for your application.

Important Information

The tooling includes an approximately 0.440″ / 11mm square section. This measurement relates to the square drive/tooling section and must not be interpreted as the usable working length of the tool.

Always confirm thread size, available depth, bore clearance and fixture access before machining. Follow the supplied TIME-SERT® installation instructions and use the supplied Driver Oil during installation as directed.
